  • Based on 2025 BC commercial driver's licence manual
  • Updated for January 2025

A Class 1 driver's licence is the most common licence category - it's the one that's generally referred to as a "commercial driver's licence". With your Class 1 driver's licence you can drive almost any type of motor vehicles: semi-truck trailers, large straight body trucks like a flatbed or cube, heavy commercial equipment like mixer trucks and dump trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, taxis or limousines, mobile crane truck, and buses. All Class 1 licence applicants need to be 19 years old to apply and hold a full-privilege B.C. driver's licence (Class 5 or 6) or an out-of-province equivalent. To get your Class 1 commercial driver's licence in British Columbia, you'll first need to get a learner's licence before taking your road test for a full-privilege licence. To get your learner's licence, you'll need to pass a general knowledge test, a road signs test, and meet medical standards. If you're planning to drive with air brakes, you'll also have to take the air brake knowledge test. Once you have your learner licence, you'll be on your way to get your full Class 1 Commercial Licence. To obtain it, you'll need to pass a commercial road test, which includes a pre-trip inspection test (including air brakes if applicable), a road test, and a driver's medical exam.

This practice test will help you prepare for your Class 1 knowledge exam. It contains 50 questions based on the official commercial driver's handbook. You'll get a hint and a detailed explanation for each question to help you better understand and remember the underlying rule.
